Stained and polished concrete occupies the premium tier of interior concrete finishing — a floor treatment that turns what most people consider an afterthought (the gray slab under their house or garage) into a designed, durable surface that holds up to daily use without waxing, refinishing, or replacement.

Acid Staining
Acid staining is a chemical reaction, not a surface coating. The acid in the stain solution reacts with the minerals present in the concrete itself — primarily calcium hydroxide — to create a translucent, permanently bonded color that is literally part of the concrete.
The result is variegated, marbled, and always unique: no two acid-stained floors look identical, because the reaction responds to variations in the concrete's mineral composition and curing history. Colors are naturally in the earth-tone spectrum (amber, terracotta, sage, blue-gray, warm tan), and depth and variation within those tones makes the floor look more like natural stone than painted concrete.
Acid staining works on both new and existing slabs, making it a viable option for renovation projects where the existing concrete is structurally sound.
Water-Based Acrylic Staining
Water-based stains offer a broader color range than acid staining, including more consistent, vibrant, and non-earth-tone options. They're applied to the concrete surface rather than reacting with it, producing a more predictable, uniform result.
This makes water-based stains a better choice when a specific, consistent color outcome is required — a company logo color in a showroom floor, for example, or a precise match to interior design color palettes.
Polished Concrete
Concrete polishing uses progressively finer diamond abrasives to grind and buff the slab surface to a smooth, reflective sheen — ranging from a satin matte to a high-gloss mirror finish depending on the final grit level. Polished concrete is increasingly common in modern homes, upscale garages, and commercial showrooms precisely because it requires almost no ongoing maintenance: no waxing, no stripping, no refinishing.
Metallic & Flake Epoxy Coatings
For garages that double as workshops, hobby spaces, or showrooms, metallic and color-flake epoxy coatings provide a thick, durable, chemical- and oil-resistant surface that also happens to look excellent. Unlike staining (which requires a sound, properly cured concrete substrate), epoxy systems can be applied over slabs with minor surface imperfections, making them a practical choice for older garage slabs.
